The Old Castle.

The Old Castle is the first fortification built by Russian dukes in the XI cent. In the XIII cent. the city of Grodno was merged in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania & became the  target of the  numerous attacks of the Crusaders in the next century.
In 1391 the castle became one the main residencies of the Duke Vitovt, who built in 1398 the stone gothic castle with five towers instead of the wooden fortress.

In 1445 the Great Duke of Lithuania Kazimir IV accepted here the Polish Ambassador, who offered him a crown. The Polish King Stephen Báthory made Grodno practically the capital of the Commonwealth of Poland. Upon an initiative of the king the castle was rebuilt in the Revival style by the Italian architect Scotto from Parma in 1580.

The New Castle — in Grodno was built in 1734—1751 as a summer residence for Polish kings & Great Dukes of Lithuania during the rule of August III, the Polish King and the great Duke of Lithuania.  The project of the castle was made by Karl Friedrich Poppelman.

The works in the castle were also made by Johann Friedrich Knobel, Joachim Daniel von Jauch.  & up to 1789 – by Giuseppe de Sacco.

The New Castle was the place for the Seims of the 1st Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.  The agreement on the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth Partition between Russia & Prussia was signed in this building in 1793. In 1795 the Polish king Stanisław August Poniatowski signed an abdication here.  The king lived here up to 1797.
